Introduction:
Previously known as NA-244 Karachi West-I is a constituency for the National Assembly of Pakistan. It includes Manghopir Town (partly).
District | Division | Province | Electorate |
---|---|---|---|
Karachi West | Karachi | Sindh | 155,824 |
Popularity Reason: Manghopir is known for the shrine of Sufi saint Pir Mangho. The shrine features a unique pond with fed crocodiles, believed to embody the saint. Referenced in ancient texts, crocodiles may have been here for centuries. The area is significant for Karachi’s Sheedi community, descendants of African slaves. They celebrate their roots annually, but recent disruptions occurred due to street conflicts and militant presence. Recent operations have cleared the area, raising hopes for the festival’s return. Saint Mangho, who arrived from Iraq in the 13th century during Mongol attacks, settled in present-day Karachi.
