At Jinnah International Airport in Karachi on Thursday, Sindh Chief Minister Murad Ali Shah welcomed students returning from Kyrgyzstan after the Bishkek mob assaults of last week. Deputy Prime Minister Ishaq Dar had declared the previous day that more than 3,000 Pakistani students had left Kyrgyzstan and that by midnight, the figure was predicted to reach 4,000. After meeting with officials in Bishkek on Tuesday on the mob attacks that targeted international students, including Pakistanis, he held a press conference in Islamabad. CM Murad told the journalists at the airport that 99 of the 205 students who returned on Thursday’s flight were from Karachi.
99 of the 205 kids returned on Thursday’s flight were from Karachi, according to CM Murad, who was speaking to the media at the airport. According to APP, the chief minister stated that twenty-two of them were from Hyderabad, thirteen from Khairpur, fifteen from Naushahro Feroze, twelve from Sukkur and Nawabshah, five from each of Badin, Dadu, Mirpurkhas, and Jacobabad, three from Tando Adam, two from each of Jamshoro and Kashmore, and one from each of Kandhkot, Pano Aqil, and Tharparkar. Plans have been made for the pupils’ return trips to their hometowns. For these kids, their parents, and the entire nation, the event in Kyrgyzstan was a serious concern. They had gone to study, hence it was not their fault,” CM Murad remarked.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs was commended for its prompt action in establishing a crisis management unit. With six of them suffering minor injuries, CM Murad reported that 180 students remained in Kyrgyzstan. The chief minister said the injured will receive medical examinations and that the Ministry of Foreign Affairs has been informed that the Sindh government will cover the costs of returning the remaining students home. CM Murad confirmed that to accommodate students returning from Kyrgyzstan to Pakistani medical institutes, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif formed a 25-member committee, led by Dar, to facilitate the students’ continued studies.
The chief minister especially commended PPP Chairman Bilawal Bhutto-Zardari for facilitating the students and ensuring their safety through his ties in Kyrgyzstan. “The Pakistani government bears the responsibility for our citizens, no matter where they may be in the world,” the chief minister declared. “Our government of Pakistan is definitely responsible for ensuring the safety and security of our children at all times. Children travel abroad for their education, and our laborers and technical people travel abroad to earn foreign exchange and take care of their families.”
