On Thursday, a 5.4-magnitude earthquake was felt throughout Pakistan, primarily in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. According to the Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD), the quake struck at 5:56 am UTC (10:56 am Pakistan time) with a magnitude of 5.4.
The epicenter of the earthquake was 215 kilometers deep and was situated in Afghanistan’s Hindu Kush Region, according to the PMD website. According to the USGS, the epicenter of the earthquake was located 28 kilometers to the west-southwest of the Afghan town of Ishkashim. The earthquakes were felt in several KP cities, including Mardan, Malakand, Hangu, Buner, Shangla, Dir, and Charsadda, according to Dawn News.
Islamabad, Rawalpindi, and Lahore also experienced shocks, according to Dawn News. There have been no reported fatalities thus far. The tremors caused the Rescue 1122 personnel in KP’s Shangla region to go on high alert. As of right now, the Shangla service has not received any emergency calls, according to a statement from the Rescue 1122 control room.
Lahore, Multan, Islamabad, Gujranwala, and Sargodha were among the Punjabi cities that felt the tremor, according to the Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA). The authority had not yet received any reports of any loss of life or property, according to the PDMA statement, which quoted early sources.
“Everybody in the Punjab government is occupied inspecting buildings. The PDMA director-general was reported in the announcement as saying, “The staff and machinery have been put on alert to deal with the earthquake’s aftershocks.”
