The Pakistan Army’s media wing reported that five terrorists were slain in an intelligence-based operation (IBO) in the Hassan Khel region of the Peshawar district on Sunday, while a captain and a soldier died. Security personnel carried out the IBO in response to reports of terrorist activity, according to a statement from the Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR). The ISPR stated, “During the operation, own troops effectively engaged the terrorists’ location, resulting in the sending of five terrorists to hell and the injuries of three terrorists.” According to the account, Havildar Shafiqullah, 36, and Captain Hussain Jahangir, 25, who was “leading his troops from the front,” accepted martyrdom during the gunfight.
The ISPR stated that a “sanitization operation is being carried out to eliminate any terrorists found in the area.” It further stated, “Our resolve to eradicate the threat of terrorism is strengthened by the selfless sacrifices made by our courageous soldiers.” Three terrorists were slain and an army commander was martyred earlier this month during an IBO in the Zhob area of Balochistan. Terrorist activity in Pakistan has increased, particularly in KP and Balochistan, following the Tehreek-i-Taliban Pakistan’s termination of their truce with the government in November 2022.
In response to up to 245 incidents of terror attacks and counter-terror operations, Pakistan saw 432 violence-related fatalities and 370 injuries among civilians, security personnel, and outlaws during the first quarter of 2024, according to a security report released in March by the Centre for Research and Security Studies. Over 92% of all deaths and 86% of attacks, including acts of terrorism and security forces operations, occurred in KP and Balochistan, two countries that border Afghanistan. According to the report, each of the two groups accounted for 51% and 41% of all deaths in the first quarter of 2024.
