Terrorists attacked the Jhangi checkpost in the Taunsa district of Punjab during the night, injuring seven police officers, the police reported on Wednesday. Syed Mubashir, a spokesperson for the Punjab Police, said that this was the second attack on the checkpost since January in which a police official and a civilian had died and another police official had been hurt in a drive-by incident. Mubashir described the most recent incident as a three-hour gunfight between the “already alert policemen” stationed at the checkpost and “15–20 terrorists who took advantage of the dark to launch a fierce attack from various directions.”
He said that the assailants had contemporary weapons such as laser-equipped rifles, hand grenades, and rocket launchers. “The terrorists wanted to take over the checkpost and take the officials hostage,” he said. As the terrorists ran out of ammo, the spokesperson continued, they were “forced to flee after strong resistance” put up by the police. A representative for Elite Force said that severely injured policeman Shahid Mansoor was taken to Nishtar Hospital in Multan for treatment.
Among the injured were Constables Muhammad Amir, Ashiq Zain, Rehmatullah, Sanaullah, and Additional Sub-Inspector Imran; there were also injuries to Elite Force Constable Tariq to mention. Mubashir emphasized that two days prior, the district police officer (DPO) and the regional police officer (RPO) of Dera Ghazi Khan had visited the checkpost to alert the staff of the possibility of an assault. Additionally, the police officers had practiced defense. The provincial police were “alert,” according to Punjab Inspector General (IG) Dr. Usman Anwar, who also pledged to “never let the terrorists succeed in their nefarious aims.” He claimed that as soon as they heard about the event, the DPO and the RPO sent reinforcements to the scene.
IG Anwar stated that the district police and the elite forces reacted with full force, noting that seven troops had been injured while “fighting bravely.” Along with ordering the injured police officers to receive “the best medical care” possible, IG Anwar went on to say that searches were underway in the region to locate the attackers. Subsequently, the RPO stated that the checkpost already had more staff, supplies, and guns. He also expressed his appreciation for the sub-inspector Mohiuddin’s and his team’s efforts in defending the checkpost.
Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz of Punjab praised the police personnel for taking on the terrorists and vehemently denounced the attack. She gave orders for the greatest treatment facilities to be given to the injured in a statement that was posted on X.
