Friday marked a momentous day in the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Assembly when Ali Amin Gandapur, a representative of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), won the esteemed position of Chief Minister for the province, signifying a major victory for the party. In the much-awaited poll, Gandapur prevailed with a dominant 90 votes, while Abdullah Khan, the candidate from the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz, came in second with only 16 votes.
Having previously served as a federal minister and won elections to both the Provincial Assembly and the National Assembly (MNA) in the general elections of 2024, Gandapur is a seasoned political figure whose rise to prominence is highlighted by his wealth of experience. With Gandapur’s nomination for the prestigious post earlier in February, PTI founder Imran Khan made a calculated move inside the party’s leadership that culminated in this historic appointment. Yet, there have been rumors relating Gandapur to several assault and corruption charges in several police stations in Rawalpindi, Lahore, Faisalabad, and Gujranwala, thus his rise to power has not been without controversy.
Despite the barrage of accusations, Gandapur comes out as confident and ambitious for his position. He pledges to give priority to industries like tourism and mining, realizing their critical roles in the province’s growth. Gandapur stressed, reiterating the province government’s commitment to protecting rights, “We are not begging. We are merely requesting our rights,” the speaker said, alluding to possible conflicts in the fight for social justice. A new era under Gandapur’s leadership began on February 28 with the official induction of the newly elected assembly members, presided over by Speaker Mushtaq Ahmad Ghani.
