Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) Chairman Bilawal Bhutto-Zardari stated on Friday that a court ruling has brought a once-dead political party back to life, blaming the judiciary for the nation’s current political predicament. Speaking before a National Assembly session today, the PPP lawmaker targeted the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) and the court’s decision to remove the bat symbol from the party in advance of the general elections on February 8.
“The nation’s current dilemma is not the fault of any member of this House. The PPP chairman stated, “The court alone was and still is the cause of the situation. Bilawal asserted during his speech to the National Assembly today that Pakistan’s judiciary is continuously “interfering” in political matters.
The youthful politician asserted, “The history of the judiciary is before everyone,” and added that his party has to battle for justice on behalf of its martyred leaders, Benazir and Zulfikar Ali Bhutto. He lamented the delay in justice for ordinary people and continued by saying that the PPP founder had not received a fair trial from the legal system. He mentioned that his grandfather was granted justice after his death this year.
Regarding the PTI’s bat symbol dispute, Bilawal stated that the court found that the party’s “rigged” intra-party elections were the primary cause. He was adamant that neither he nor the government had decided on the bat symbol. He said that the ruling had political ramifications and that it helped the PTI at the last minute, bringing it closer to the general elections on February 8. “This verdict resurrected a dead political party after which, it started mobilizing,” he stated.
Before the elections, the PTI’s electoral emblem, the “bat,” was taken away from it by the Supreme Court. He said that the court had rendered a political decision that the party had not even asked for, saying, “They have handed out the verdict and seats [to PTI] like candy.” “The law and the Constitution did not even permit it, and they did not even ask for it.”
Taking a swipe at the judiciary’s role in the nation, Bilawal stated that the body is so competent that it can do more than just administer the courts it can also construct dams. During his statement before the Parliament, the PPP leader bemoaned the emergence of hate politics in the nation, to which the opposition responded with noise. “There was never a political divide like there is now.”
Drawing attention to Bangladesh’s political predicament, Bilawal stated that Pakistanis are closely monitoring the events that have transpired since the anti-government demonstration that led to the resignation of prime leader Sheikh Hasina. He emphasized that it is imperative that the state now address the concerns of those who are going through an economic downturn.
