The wife of former Prime Minister Imran Khan, Bushra Bibi, has been moved from Adiala Jail to Bani Gala, where the authorities have designated her husband’s home as a sub-jail.
In the Toshakhana corruption case, an accountability court sentenced Bushra Bibi to 14 years in prison on January 31, 2024. Her husband was also given a 10-year ban from holding public office. The couple was charged with using a covert fund to obtain presents and expensive cars from foreign dignitaries and then failing to deposit them in the national treasury.
After the decision was proclaimed without her presence, Bushra Bibi willingly turned herself in by showing up at Adiala Jail. But in response to requests from the federal and Punjabi governments, the jail administration chose to move her to Bani Gala, where Imran Khan’s home was converted into a sub-jail.
The jail administration is reportedly examining several ideas to provide Bushra Bibi, Imran Khan’s spiritual guide, with a safe and peaceful sub-jail. The government rest house, Zaman Park, and Bani Gala House are a few of the choices. Both the district administration in Islamabad and the Punjab government will announce the opening of the sub-jail.
Opposition parties have expressed disapproval and controversy around the government’s decision to designate Bani Gala House as a sub-jail, claiming that Imran Khan and his spouse are receiving special treatment. They said that the action was immoral and illegal and that it was a mockery of accountability and justice.
Nonetheless, the ruling was upheld by the government and PTI leaders, who said that Imran Khan and Bushra Bibi had always obeyed the law and that the decision was legal. In addition, they stated that the pair had paid the Rs 787 million fine for building their home illegally, even though the Capital Development Authority (CDA) had just conditionally approved it in March 2020.
