LAHORE: The army’s prosecution of civilians, according to former president Dr. Arif Alvi, will eventually damage the army’s reputation both domestically and beyond. “It’s time for the country to get well and stop fostering animosity,” he said. After visiting the Punjab Assembly and meeting with PTI-backed MPAs on Monday, Dr. Alvi spoke to the media and stated that the PTI has three demands: the supremacy of the law, the release of the PTI founder chairman, and the return of the mandate from the people who won the general elections. After stating that maintaining political unrest had made peace unavoidable, he went on to say that the genuine winners of general elections ought to have their mandates restored to improve the economy’s state.
He claimed that millions of young people without jobs would have more job prospects if political disputes were resolved. He bemoaned the growing poverty and declining health and education services. According to Dr. Alvi, he had encountered party workers who spent eight months behind bars without being shown to have engaged in any aggressive behavior. The two brothers of a party worker were also arrested in one instance, he claimed. The former president praised the judges for upholding the rule of law and fairness. He added that Pakistan’s judiciary was represented in the Hamoodur Rehman Commission Report. He emphasized that instead of labeling people as traitors, the soldiers, lawmakers, and non-combatants should take a lesson from the commission’s findings.
According to him, the PTI had every right to be suspicious of judges who were biased against the party’s leaders and to keep their distance from the benches where PTI officials were being tried. Along with expressing support for the Palestinians, Dr. Alvi also commended Norway, Spain, and Ireland for their recognition of Palestine. The South African government’s decision to bring Palestine’s case before the International Court of Justice was also acknowledged by him. He emphasized that the CPEC project needed to be finished in every way and added that it was the duty of the Pakistani government to provide security for the Chinese laborers.
