On Wednesday, Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Syeda Shehrbano Naqvi, who on Monday valiantly saved a woman mobbed by a mob in Lahore’s Ichhra Bazaar on suspicion of blasphemy, paid a visit to General Syed Asim Munir, the Chief of Army Staff (COAS), at the General Headquarters. According to an official statement from the Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR), COAS Munir praised ASP Shehrbano for her professional and selfless approach to her duties in defusing a potentially explosive scenario.
A woman who was mobbed by demonstrators at Lahore’s Ichhra Bazaar last week was saved by the Punjab Police after it was noticed that she was wearing a printed shirt with Arabic calligraphy on it. The Punjab Police, under the command of ASP Shehrbano, the sub-divisional police officer at Gulbarg Lahore, responded to the spot after learning of the event and took the woman into prison, rescuing her from the hostile throng. The woman, who wished to remain anonymous, told the police she didn’t mean to hurt anyone’s feelings. She was freed, according to police, after it was confirmed that there had been a mistake and that the shirt’s design did not include any sacred scriptures. The military’s press office stated, “On February 26, the courageous officer, ASP Shehrbano, rescued a woman from the hazardous environment of Lahore’s Ichra Bazaar.”
The head of the army appreciated the important contribution played by Pakistani women in all spheres of society. According to the ISPR, he stated that Pakistani women have made a name for themselves both domestically and internationally since independence because of their skill, perseverance, and dedication. Gen. Munir emphasized that women are an essential component of Pakistani society and that both our social code and religion uphold the value of women. He also emphasized the value of maintaining social harmony and the necessity of reaching a national agreement to reduce bigotry.
When there are legal channels available to address issues and complaints, the COAS emphasizes the importance of following the law and cautions against enforcing laws on oneself. He emphasized the enduring ethos of kindness and benevolence found in Islam, noting that arbitrary acts based on heresy weaken society’s viewpoint. To guarantee the safety and security of Pakistani citizens, law enforcement forces have made sacrifices, which COAS Munir acknowledged.
