Ishaq Dar, the foreign minister and deputy prime minister, declared on Wednesday that he has formed an investigative committee to look into the mob attacks on Pakistani students in Kyrgyzstan last week. Following his visit to Bishkek, the capital of Kyrgyzstan, he made this statement at a press conference. Dar stated that the inquiry committee will look into the causes and contributing aspects of the mob violence. He disclosed that the committee will also look into the Pakistani Mission’s assistance to students in Bishkek. According to the FM, “the committee will work with Kyrgyz authorities, review all of the findings and developments at Bishkek, and submit its report within two weeks.”
Dar met Shahzaib, a Pakistani textile worker hurt during the recent mob violence in Bishkek, at the National Hospital in Bishkek on Tuesday, the day after arriving in Kyrgyzstan. Mob violence targeted Pakistani students among other overseas students on May 18. The issue escalated, according to the Kyrgyz press, after footage of a brawl between Egyptian medical students and Kyrgyz students was posted online on May 13. Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif gave Pakistan’s ambassador to Kyrgyzstan, Hasan Ali Zaigham, instructions to arrange everything related to the special plane that would be used to return Pakistani students from Kyrgyzstan after the attack.
The first flight from Kyrgyzstan, including 180 Pakistanis, including 140 students, landed at Lahore’s Allama Iqbal International Airport on May 19. Senior authorities and Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi greeted the returning students. Speaking at the event, the interior minister promised to offer transportation for students from neighboring cities.
