ISLAMABAD: The Ministry of Foreign Affairs voiced surprise on Saturday at the critical tone of certain of the statements made by various nations regarding Pakistan’s just-ended general elections. It claimed that these claims ignored the intricacy of the electoral process as well as the enthusiastic and unrestricted exercise of the right to vote by tens of millions of Pakistanis. The Foreign Office Spokesperson said in a news release that “these statements ignore the undeniable fact that Pakistan has held general elections peacefully and successfully while dealing with serious security threats, primarily from foreign-sponsored terrorism.”
Speaking about the general elections that were held in Pakistan on February 8, the spokesperson said that they had noted statements made by a few nations and organizations.
“A few claims aren’t even true. There was no blackout of the internet countrywide. To prevent terrorist attacks on Election Day, only mobile services were halted for the day. It was underlined that the electoral exercise had shown that many commentators’ worries were unfounded. According to the spokesperson, Pakistan conducted the elections as part of its commitment to creating a stable and democratic society. However, while they appreciated friendly advice, they felt that it was unobjective and constructive to criticize the process before the results were in.
“Pakistan will keep pursuing the establishment of a dynamic democratic political system. We get closer to that objective with each election and orderly handover of power. The statement went on, “We do this because it is our people’s aspiration and our founding fathers’ vision, not because of the concerns voiced by others.”
