GILGIT: Gilgit-Baltistan’s residents have been alerted to the possibility of flash floods and Glacial Lake Outburst Floods (Glof) this week. In a Monday notice, the Pakistan Meteorological Department said that between May 21 and 27, daily highs of four to six degrees Celsius, above average, are predicted in GB and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa along with wind and thunderstorms. The weather pattern is probably going to cause a Glof event or flash floods in areas of GB that are sensitive to snow and glaciers, as well as the Chitral district of KP. It recommended that local organizations, communities, and the administration exercise prudence and vigilance.
Ameer Azam Hamza, the deputy commissioner for Gilgit, issued a notice and urged people not to drive needlessly during the severe weather and to stay away from trees, billboards, and electrical lines. According to a statement, locals who live close to glaciers should exercise caution. It has been suggested to tourists to exercise caution when it rains. Many communities in the GB districts of Hunza, Nagar, Ghizer, Astore, Skardu, and Gilgit were affected by flash floods and glofs in 2022.
