ISLAMABAD: After farmers protested over delays in the grain’s purchase procedure, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif increased the aim for wheat procurement from 1.4 million tonnes to 1.8 million tonnes at his instruction. To support growers, PM Shehbaz has also directed the national grain procurement and storage organization, Pakistan Agricultural Storage and Services Corporation Limited (Passco), to ensure prompt buying. The directives were given by Mr. Sharif on Saturday before he left for Saudi Arabia to attend the World Economic Forum meeting, according to a statement released by the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO).
According to the official press release, farmers would find the decision to be “a big relief.” It was made in response to concerns raised by wheat growers. It stated that the prime minister had made the move in light of the difficulties growers are facing with the selling of wheat. In addition to raising the aim for wheat acquisition, the prime minister gave Passco priority directives to guarantee transparency and assist the growers.
