The Sindh government declared on Tuesday that all public and private establishments falling under the Department of School Education and Literacy will close on June 1 as scheduled, ruling out early summer vacations. The summer break for all institutes will finish on July 31 by the decisions made by the Sub-Committee of the Steering Committee Meeting on January 25, according to a notification released today by the School Education and Literacy Department, a copy of which is available with Dawn.com. This news follows the Punjab government’s announcement one day earlier that all public and private schools in the province would begin their summer break early on May 25.
With the region gripped by intense heat waves, the decision was made to put students’ safety and comfort first. According to a Pakistan Meteorological Department estimate, Karachi would be least affected by the week-long heatwave that is due to reach Sindh today. The temperature in at least nine cities is predicted to surge six to eight degrees Celsius over average. Jacobabad had the highest temperature on Monday, according to the Met department, at 47 degrees Celsius. Mohenjo Daro and Shaheed Benazirabad, Sakrand, Larkana, Sukkur, Padidan, 41,5 degrees, Dadu, 43,5, Rohri, 42,5 degrees, Khairpur, 41,5 degrees, Hyderabad and Chhor, 42,5 degrees, Badin, 39,5 degrees, and Thatta, 37 degrees Celsius were next. With a temperature of 36.3°C and 55% humidity on Monday, Karachi continued to be the “coolest among Sindh districts.”
Because of an impending heatwave, the Sindh government decided to postpone the intermediate exams in the province by one week on Sunday. Exams were originally scheduled on May 22, but they will now start on May 27. As a result, the Board of Secondary Education Karachi (BSEK) also announced the following day that its ongoing matriculation exams, which were originally supposed to take place from May 21 to May 27, had been postponed. “The exams will now proceed as scheduled starting on May 28.”
