Rehana Imtiaz Dar, the mother of former PTI politician Usman Dar, has defeated her opponent Khawaja Asif of the PML-N by an overwhelming majority of 50,000 votes in the NA-71 Sialkot-2 constituency.
Unofficial results show that Dar received 131,165 votes, whereas Asif, the former minister of defense and international affairs, only received 81,615 votes. Dar has never run for office before, although Asif has served as a member of the National Assembly from this same constituency five times. The PML-N is expected to suffer greatly from Dar’s win, particularly Khwaja Asif, who had been certain he would cling to his stronghold but seemed to have been let down by the electorate.
In addition to her brother-in-law Umer Dar, the district president of the PTI, Dar enjoyed the backing of her son Usman Dar, the prime minister’s special assistant for young issues. In addition, she ran on a platform of accountability, progress, and transformation, vowing to be a sincere and committed servant of the Sialkot community.
