Bail has been granted to Imran Khan and Shah Mahmood Qureshi, the founders of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), in connection with the incidents of May 9. Rawalpindi’s anti-terrorism court’s Justice Malik Ijaz Asif presided over the hearings on bail requests in the cases dated May 9. In 12 cases including the attack on GHQ and the Army Museum Imran Khan has been granted bail.
As per the court’s ruling, Imran Khan cannot be detained because all of the accused in the May 9 proceedings are free on bond. The PTI leader Shah Mahmood Qureshi has also been granted bail in 13 instances. Both Imran Khan and Shah Mahmood Qureshi were convicted in the Saifur Rehman case, hence even with the approval of their bail, they cannot be freed. In addition, the court mandated that each accused in the May 9 cases provide a bail amount of one lakh rupees. With this ruling, the legal processes about the May 9 event have taken a major turn, providing relief for Shah Mahmood Qureshi and Imran Khan.
