LAHORE: Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi declared on Thursday, “As a businessman, I will invest my money where I like.” In London, my spouse has a property. She sold her property in Dubai in 2023 after owning it there in 2017. A decade ago, I did not occupy any official post,” he declared. He clarified his stance on the Dubai Leaks, stating that up until the spring of 2022, an astounding volume of leaked property data—which includes over 23,000 properties—had been recorded as belonging to Pakistani nationals. “Tax has been paid on these properties,” he stated. The wife of Mr. Naqvi is identified as the owner of a high-value property in the leaks, based on information acquired by the Organized Crime and Corruption Reporting Project.
“Investing overseas is not illegal. As a businessman, I will invest where I want to,” he declared, adding that the FIA ought to look into people who obtained offshore real estate unlawfully. Mr. Naqvi claimed to know numerous media outlets that owned real estate in Dubai and that, as long as investments were made lawfully outside, there would be no issues. The minister, who has faced harsh backlash on social media following the discovery that his wife has overseas assets, declared, “No matter how much criticism is made against me, I will focus on service delivery.” According to the minister, one of the reasons India was developing was because it helped its businesspeople, whereas, in Pakistan, a businessman’s advancement was met with derision if it occurred.
Mr. Naqvi speculated that KP Chief Minister Ali Amin Gandapur’s claim to have taken control of a governmental building could have been made for political reasons in response to a query. Still, he cautioned, if a case like this occurred, it would be handled correctly. Regarding the PTI’s desire for talks with the establishment, he responded to another question by saying that if talks were to take place, they were to be with the government. The Minister stated that he was aware of the situation with the significant backlog of passports, citing a five- to six-month wait time for passport issuance. “I am striving to get past this obstacle,” he continued.
