KARACHI: Murad Ali Shah, the leader of the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP), won the majority of votes in the Sindh Assembly on Monday, making him the chief minister of Sindh for a third term in a row. Shah defeated Ali Khursheedi of the Mutahida Qaumi Movement (MQM-Pakistan) with 112 votes to Khursheedi’s 36. The Sindh Assembly reconvened after a half-hour delay on Monday and proceeded to vote on the selection of the province’s new chief minister.
The legislature got underway with the election of a new chief minister, with Ali Khurshidi of the Muttahida Qaumi Movement-Pakistan (MQM-P) and Murad Ali Shah of the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) vying for the role. Speaker Awais Qadir Shah gave freshly elected Sindh Assembly member Nadir Magsi his oath at the start of today’s meeting. Magsi was unable to take his oath on Saturday. The province’s chief executive will be chosen through an open poll, with voters for MQMP’s Khurshidi and the PPP’s Shah being instructed to cast their ballots to the left and right, respectively.
