ISLAMABAD: With the oath-taking of the legislators elected on February 8 amid accusations of “rigging,” the 16th National Assembly officially began its work on Thursday. Notably, former Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif returned to the Parliament after more than six years. The 284 members gathered in the House were given the oath by Speaker Raja Pervaiz Ashraf.
Among the prominent politicians who took the oath of office today amid objections from Imran Khan’s party members were PML-N President Shehbaz Sharif, former President Asif Zardari, PPP Chairman Bilawal Bhutto-Zardari, and JUI-F Chief Maulana Fazlur Rehman.
Following the conclusion of the national anthem, the Sunni Ittehad Council (SIC) members backed by the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) created a commotion around the speaker’s Dias. The party had previously announced that it would stage a protest against the alleged rigging during today’s session.
