The Lahore High Court (LHC) granted PTI leader Parvez Elahi bail and ordered his release on Tuesday night from Kot Lakhpat jail in a case involving an alleged illegal appointment he made in the Punjab Assembly while serving as chief minister. Earlier today, LHC Judge Sultan Tanvir Ahmed granted Elahi’s bail request and granted his liberty. Elahi’s bail petition was granted, with bail set at Rs. 500,000 with two sureties each in the same amount, according to the court ruling, a copy of which is accessible on Dawn.com. The order stated that the case against Elahi required more investigation into his guilt. The PTI chief had arrived at the Zahoor Elahi Palace, according to Elahi’s attorney, Amir Saeed Rawn, who spoke with Dawn.com.
Earlier in the month, Elahi was transferred to the Kot Lakhpat jail. Elahi thanked God in a message posted on his official X account for his pardon and for giving him the courage to stand his ground. “I am appreciative of the judges who upheld the truth and allowed me to go. I am appreciative of everyone who prayed for me and helped me during this trying period. Gujarati people experienced a great deal of cruelty and abuse. In Gujarat, even our mandate was taken. Until “the return of our mandate,” the PTI leader also ruled out speaking with his cousin, Pakistan Muslim League-Quaid chairman Chaudhry Shujaat, and his kids.
He said that Mohsin Naqvi, the interior minister, “played the most important role” in getting him arrested. He pledged, “I was, am, and will remain with Imran Khan.” Elahi was commended for his devotion to the PTI and congratulated on his release by PTI Senator Faisal Javed. His loyalty to the PTI was also praised by the party. Fawad Chaudhry, a PTI leader and former federal minister, called Elahi’s announcement a “breath of fresh air.” The former chief minister of Punjab was first arrested on June 1 of last year. After several releases and re-arrests, he has been in custody ever since. The state’s assault on the PTI following the violent protests on May 9 that resulted in the vandalism of significant military and government installations coincided with the legal issues. The matter under consideration concerns the purportedly illicit designation of Muhammad Khan Bhatti as the chief minister’s principal secretary while Elahi was the chief minister of Punjab.
On June 3 of last year, Elahi was first taken into custody in connection with the Punjab Assembly recruitment matter. The case concerned the unlawful hiring of twelve Grade-17 officers for the provincial assembly, and Elahi was charged with manipulating test results to favor his preferred applicants. After being detained on September 18 in connection with the purported unauthorized appointment of Bhatti, a Lahore court placed him under judicial remand. Police Elahi’s two-day physical remand in the case was granted by a Lahore district and sessions court in October. A few days later, the Punjab Anti-Corruption Establishment reported to the court that it purportedly had Rs4.1 million taken from the residence of the former chief minister.
Bhatti was released from custody in the case by a court magistrate the next month, but he was still detained since he was under judicial remand for further corruption cases. Elahi’s request for bail was turned down later that month.
