ISLAMABAD: Amnesty International’s demand for the prompt restoration of social media platform X has received full support from Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf (PTI). The PTI claims that Pakistan’s unjustified social media blockade and ongoing oppression of its citizens have made the country an international laughingstock. A party spokesman claimed that Pakistan has been given opportunities to be mocked by the international community due to the government’s daily, unjustified shutdown of the internet, particularly social media platforms, to hide information about the “mandate theft” in the general elections.
He claimed that over the previous 23 months, the Constitution was essentially suspended and that fundamental rights were being brazenly violated, according to the party’s media wing. “It is disgusting that X has been blocked in the nation for more than a month. As should be the situation in a democratic nation, we completely support the demand of 28 civil society organizations for the immediate lifting of the social media platform’s restriction and the unhindered flow of information,” the PTI spokesperson stated.
He proceeded to state that the “usurper and anti-constitutional” group’s primary goal had been to kill journalists and freedom of expression. According to him, social media workers and unbiased journalists had been the subject of various violent and coercive measures, such as forced disappearances and family blackmail. In an attempt to gain control over the media, he bemoaned the attempts to stifle free speech and the press to silence sensible, critical voices.
A PTI spokesman claimed that the PDM-2 administration, which the “people-rejected,” had no qualms about carrying out a campaign of fundamental and constitutional rights breaches. He clarified that it was against Article 19 of the Constitution and international law for the government to shut down social networking sites without providing any explanation or rationale. He stated that PTI called for the prompt reinstatement of the social media platform “X” and endorsed the statement made by Amnesty International.
