ISLAMABAD: On Thursday, Shibli Faraz was nominated by former Prime Minister Imran Khan to be the new Senate opposition leader. Mr. Faraz has the support of 21 senators to assume the office. After meeting with Mr. Khan in Adiala Jail, Mr. Faraz and other leaders made the announcement. The Senate chairman was supposed to publicly acknowledge Mr. Faraz’s position when the senators’ signatures were authenticated, he said in an interview with Dawn. “Today I met Imran Khan in Adiala Jail, where he confirmed my nomination.”
The PTI-backed Sunni Ittehad Council chairman, Sahibzada Hamid Raza, who also met with Mr. Khan, stated that the former prime minister flatly refuted Saudi Arabia’s involvement in the “regime change conspiracy,” which alludes to Mr. Khan’s overthrow in April 2022. Days after PTI lawmaker Sher Afzal Marwat charged that Saudi Arabia and the United States were working together to overthrow the PTI administration, raising concerns during a crucial visit to Pakistan by a high-ranking Saudi team, the clarification was provided. One day later, the party’s leaders emphasized their support for Saudi Arabia and formally distanced themselves from Mr. Marwat’s remarks.
Imran Khan was quoted by Muzzammil Aslam, another PTI official, as stating that Saudi Arabia contributed $2 billion just four months prior to the PTI government’s overthrow. Imran Khan added, “Saudi Arabia’s involvement was crucial to the organization of the foreign minister’s conference, which took place during the PTI government. Raoof Hasan, the central information secretary for the PTI, announced that the organization would pursue a more assertive media policy and that the first moves would be done in a week. We are nearing the end of our campaign, and shortly all institutions will be sending out encouraging indications. Imran Khan will take over as Pakistan’s prime minister shortly,” he declared.
In an attempt to fortify the party at the local level, the PTI has also launched a national organization campaign. In this context, the task of creating “block code-level organizations” throughout Pakistan has been delegated to senior PTI leader Advocate Shoaib Shaheen. Mr. Shaheen will supervise the establishment and operation of the party’s organizational structure, as per the notification from PTI Secretary General Omar Ayub Khan. Bushra Bibi, the spouse of Mr. Khan, has also drawn the attention of the party, which claims that the inadequate food and living circumstances during her incarceration have severely deteriorated her health. The PTI alleges that obstacles are preventing her from receiving essential medical care.
