LAHORE: The PTI has threatened to join journalists in their revolt and has declared its intention to fight Punjab’s recently passed defamation law in court, adding to its already strong resistance. PTI leader Malik Ahmed Khan Bhachar remarked at a press conference on Sunday that the problem also “exposed” PPP, whom he accused of providing tacit support to the law. The Punjab administration of the PML-N was being accused of violating the law, as of its 100th day. He declared, “We support the media on this issue because the PPP’s implicit support for the bill exposes it.” According to Mr. Bhachar, the opposition leader in the Punjab Assembly, Governor Sardar Saleem Haider traveled overseas “to give the speaker a chance to become acting governor and sign the bill into law”.
He declared that his party would bring the topic to court and invite journalists to discuss it. When questioned about the PTI’s attempt to enact a comparable defamation law in the province during its previous administration, Mr. Bhachar stated that his party’s government had retreated in response to criticism from the media and civil society. “However, the current authorities have disregarded the concerns expressed by journalists and social media users.” During most of his news conference, Mr. Bhachar criticized Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif and her cabinet for their first 100 days in office. He questioned the government’s recent project climbs and claimed that by renaming them, it was claiming credit for PTI’s accomplishments.
Mr. Bhachar enquired, “Which new project has been executed, and what allocation has been made by the TikTok government during this period,” implying that the government was more concerned with enhancing its online persona. He continued by saying that the Nawaz Sharif Kisan Card, which was previously known as the PTI’s Kisan Card, is now being funded by the chief minister’s father. According to Mr. Bhachar, the previous PTI government also began modernizing the province’s hospitals and came up with the concept of launching an air ambulance service.
The opposition leader claimed that the PML-N government had only allocated Rs300 million for the project, despite extravagant claims of Rs30 billion, for the new cancer hospital that was to be built in Lahore. The Punjab government’s wheat purchase program, which “destroyed” farmers and “crashed the market,” was criticized by the PTI leader. He asserted that the growers are compelled to sell their produce for Rs2,000 each maund.
