The Punjab government on Friday changed the timing of all public and private schools from May 18 to May 31 in anticipation of the extreme heatwaves that are predicted to affect much of the nation over the next ten days. The Meteorological Department issued a warning yesterday stating that the majority of the country will experience heatwave conditions due to high pressure in the upper atmosphere, with Punjab and Sindh experiencing particularly severe heatwave conditions from May 21 to May 27.
In Sindh and Punjab, daytime temperatures are “likely to remain 4 to 6 degrees centigrade above normal” from May 21 to May 23, and six to eight degrees Celsius from May 23 to May 27. It was recommended that people drink water and shield themselves from needless sunshine exposure. In light of the bad weather, public and private schools throughout the province will be open from May 18 to May 31 from 7 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. on Mondays through Thursdays and Saturdays, and from 7 a.m. to 10 a.m. on Fridays, according to a notification from the Punjab government’s school education department.
The notification also directed school administrators to take the following preventative actions: make sure fans were in good operating order, make sure water coolers were available, and make sure that no student was forced to spend the summer sitting in an open area or on the school lawn. In addition, chief executive officers and heads of institutions were instructed to make sure that the aforementioned directives were followed in “true letter and spirit.”
Rana Sikandar Hayat, the Minister for School Education in Punjab, emphasized the critical need for immediate climate action and that every person had a “vital role to play in mitigating the effects of climate change!” A supplementary statement also stated that the province’s public and private schools would be closed for summer vacation from June 1 to August 14; the new school year would start on August 15.
