KARACHI: Sarim Burney, a human rights activist, was taken into custody on Wednesday by the Federal Investigation Agency’s (FIA) Anti-Human Trafficking Cell. Upon his return from the United States, Burney was apprehended at Karachi’s Jinnah International Airport. He is charged with selling children in the US, adopting children illegally, and transferring minors illegally. The FIA and an international agency worked together to make the arrest. Entrepreneur Sarim Burney is also the chairman of the nonprofit “Sarim Burney Welfare Trust” and its founder. There are serious allegations against the well-known social worker of selling and trafficking children.
Officials from the FBI allege that Burney has illegally brought over thirty children into the United States. The US government filed a complaint, which prompted the FIA to launch an investigation. The illegal adoption of these children is said to have been made easier by Burney and his confidence. FIA sources claimed that the kids were given to the Sarim Burney Trust in Karachi at different points in time. On social media three days ago, Sarim Burney made an announcement stating that he would be going back to Pakistan to face the charges, refuting the accusations and calling them untrue. Burney’s movements have reportedly been watched closely for a while, according to sources. As soon as the American passenger plane touched down in Karachi, he was taken into custody.
Burney’s legal team made an effort to speak with him outside the FIA office following his arrest. But the Sarim Burney Trust’s attorneys were unable to see him. They added that they have a petition against the FIA on file. The specific accusations made against Sarim Burney have not yet been made public.
