To locate the Shawwal moon and determine whether Eidul Fitr, commemorating the end of Ramadan, falls on Wednesday or Thursday, the Central Ruet-i-Hilal Committee will convene in Islamabad later today. According to Radio Pakistan, the district and zonal Ruet-i-Hilal committee meetings would take place concurrently at their respective headquarters and on the roof of the Federal Secretariat’s Kohsar Block in Islamabad. At the same time, the central moon-sighting body will meet there as well.
Ruet-i-Hilal Committee members, representatives from Suparco, the Ministry of Science and Technology, and the Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) will be at the meeting, headed by Maulana Abdul Khabir Azad. After the crescent was not visible on Monday, several nations will celebrate Eidul Fitr on Wednesday, or tomorrow. If the committee successfully identifies the new moon today, Pakistan will celebrate Eid with the rest of the globe.
Among the nations commemorating Eid tomorrow are Australia, Saudi Arabia, Qatar, the United Arab Emirates, Bahrain, and Kuwait. The Met department has stated that there is a “chance” of seeing the moon today based on astronomical considerations. It stated that most of the nation would see partly cloudy or fair weather. The Central Ruet-i-Hilal Committee had also mandated a day earlier that members of the public report any sightings of the moon to the committees that oversee their different regions.
Maulana Azad had told Dawn that in-depth talks and meetings were conducted with religious leaders and organizations throughout the nation, particularly in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. It is improbable that any cleric would organize their private moon sighting committee, he had added, adding that all groups who had previously expressed concerns to the Ruet-i-Hilal Committee were taken on board. Due to discrepancies in the evidence of moon sightings and disregard for the directives of the Central Ruet-i-Hilal committee, different regions of the nation have historically celebrated Eid on various dates.
