ISLAMABAD: Shehbaz Sharif of the Pakistan Muslim League-N and Omar Ayub Khan of the Sunni Ittehad Council (SIC) approved their nomination papers for prime minister on Saturday, according to Speaker of the National Assembly Sardar Ayaz Sadiq. After reviewing the nomination papers, the Speaker authorized them for the position of Prime Minister, according to a news release from the National Assembly secretariat. When the National Assembly meets on Sunday at 11 a.m., the prime minister will be chosen during that session. For the position, only two applicants put in their nominations.
MNAs Romina Khursheed Alam, Shaza Fatima Khawaja, Sardar Awais Ahmed Khan Laghari, Ahsan Iqbal, Kessoo Mal Kheel Das, Anusha Rahman Khan, Hanif Abbasi, and Jamal Shah Kakar seconded the nomination papers for MNA Main Muhammad Shahbaz. The nomination papers were proposed by MNAs Syed Khursheed Ahmad Shah, Khawaja Muhammad Asif, Tariq Bashir Cheema, Rana Tanvir Hussain, Dr. Tariq Fazal Chaudhary, Sardar Muhammad Yousaf Zaman, Attaullah Tarar, and Abdul Aleem Khan and seconded by MNAs Sardar Muhammad Yousaf Zaman, Attaullah Tarar, and Abdul Aleem Khan.
It was suggested by MNAs Barrister Gohar Ali Khan, Asad Qaiser, Riaz Khan Fatyana, and Umair Khan Niazi that Omar Ayub Khan run for Prime Minister of Pakistan and Leader of the House, and it was seconded by MNAs Muhammad Sanaullah Khan Mastikhel, Ali Khan Jadoon, Mujahid Ali, and Malik Mohammad Amir Dogar. The House’s division of members would be used to conduct the prime minister’s election.
Per the Constitution, “bells” inside the Parliament House will ring for five minutes before the start of the Prime Minister’s vote, alerting all members to congregate inside if they are not currently in the chamber. No one will be permitted to enter or exit the hall until the PM’s election is over, and the doors will be locked once the procedure starts. Voting by division will take place under the Speaker’s supervision. The Speaker will declare, for instance, that “whoever wants to vote for candidate A can go to lobby A” and “whoever wants to vote for candidate B, can go to lobby B” if there are two candidates. A lobby C may also exist if there are three candidates.
A staff member of the Assembly Secretariat will be stationed at the entrance of the aforementioned lobbies to enter each member of the National Assembly’s name in a register. Voting for each candidate will be visible to those seated in the galleries, and the entire process will be transparent. The Prime Minister shall be chosen by the votes of the majority of the members of the National Assembly; provided, however, that if no member obtains such a majority in the first poll, a second poll shall be held between the members who secure the two highest numbers of votes in the first poll, and the member who secures a majority of votes of the members present and voting shall be declared to have been elected as Prime Minister; further provided, that if the number of votes secured by two or more members securing the highest number of votes is equal, another poll shall be held between them until one of them obtains a majority of the votes of the National Assembly.”
