Pakistan’s recently elected Prime Minister, Shahbaz Sharif, tends to make awkward speech mistakes and end up as a laughing stock on social media. His most recent faux pas came immediately after he took the oath of office as prime minister when he thanked everyone for selecting him as the leader of the opposition. Many were left to speculate if he was insane, confused, or just plain stupid as a result of this.
When will Shahbaz Sharif give a speech that is error-free and devoid of any faux pas? Will the day come when he can speak clearly and confidently without stammering or saying something absurd? Will he ever be able to stop becoming the subject of internet memes, where people are waiting impatiently for his next gaffe? Possessing a persistent case of foot-in-mouth disease, which causes him to say inappropriate and absurd things at inappropriate and outrageous moments, makes it unlikely that he will.
It could benefit Shahbaz Sharif to learn from his charismatic and articulate brother, Nawaz Sharif, a well-known politician. Or perhaps he ought to enlist the assistance of a teleprompter and a speechwriter to assist him in creating and delivering his remarks. Perhaps he should just say nothing and let his deeds speak for him. That would be preferable. Since silence is golden, as they say, it might be the only thing that saves his honor and reputation in Shahbaz Sharif’s situation.
