ISLAMABAD: PM Shehbaz Sharif has resigned as president of the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N), the party’s information secretary Marriyum Aurangzeb announced on Monday. On her official X account, Aurangzeb announced the party president’s resignation. In his resignation letter to the PML-N secretary general, PM Shehbaz referred to the turbulent events of 2017 that led to Nawaz’s “unjust” removal from the Prime Minister’s office and the party presidency, and he stated that he had been given the duty of taking over as the party’s president. He continued, “I am encouraged by recent events that have cleared our leader with honor, reaffirming his pure character and dedication to serving our country.”
In response to recent developments, the Prime Minister stated that he believes it is time for Mohammad Nawaz Sharif to reclaim his position as the President of the Pakistan Muslim League (N) and provide his invaluable leadership and vision to steer the party forward. “Consequently, I humbly submit my resignation as President of the Pakistan Muslim League (N) with a profound sense of obligation and respect for our party’s tenets,” he continued. In accordance with Clause 15 of the party constitution, the PML-N has resolved to call a meeting of the central council of the party on May 18 in Lahore, following the resignation of the senior member. All of the general council members have received notices about the meeting from PML-N Secretary General Ahsan Iqbal.
The party chief has received a resignation letter from PM Shehbaz, who told him of his choice two days prior. Nawaz is going to be the party’s next president, having been elected during the central council meeting. Weeks after party Chief Nawaz Sharif was said to be taking the lead again in PML-N matters, even the senior leadership confirmed the development, PM Shehbaz made his decision.
