ISLAMABAD: Early on Monday, authorities said, a speeding automobile plowed over protestors staging a sit-in on the outskirts of Red Zone, resulting in the deaths of two and injuries of four, including a police inspector. Participants in the ‘Save Gaza’ protest were sleeping on a section of Jinnah Avenue between Express Chowk and the former Parade Ground at the time of the incident, according to the police. When the incident happened, the local streetlights were turned off. “A speeding automobile appeared on the road at around 2:45 a.m., ran over five participants, and then struck the inspector and a police barricade.” The vehicle then accelerated, taking Attaturk Avenue and heading towards Ayub Chowk.
The control room was notified by police assigned to special duty about the demonstration. A patrolling squad responded by stopping the vehicle, apprehending the driver, and transporting him to the police station. Subsequently, the automobile driver was detained and a charge was filed against him under sections 322, 337-G, 427, and 279 of the Pakistan Penal Code at the Kohsar police station. According to the police, Mohammad Roman Sajid and an unidentified male, who was between the ages of 40 and 45, perished at the scene. At the same time, Inspector Ijaz Ahmed, Mohammad Talha Ilyas, Hamad Hassan, and Faisal Hayat were all hurt.
When contacted, a police representative stated that speeding was the reason behind the collision. But the motorist is being investigated and hasn’t appeared in court to seek his remand. According to him, the civil society participants have been attending the demonstration organized by former Jamaat-i-Islami (JI) Senator Mushtaq Ahmad Khan for around a week. The participants sleep on the road and stay at the location all day and night. The spokesperson continued, “More than twenty protestors were asleep when the disaster happened.
