ISLAMABAD: At Islamabad’s Parliament House, voting for the six open Senate seats in the by-elections started on Thursday and will run until 4 p.m. 52 senators, including Senate Chairman Sadiq Sanjrani, Deputy Chairman Mirza Muhammad Afridi, House Leader Ishaq Dar, and Leader of the Opposition Dr. Shahzad Waseem, stood aside on Monday after serving out their terms. Three Balochistani seats, two Sindhi seats, and one Islamabad seat are up for by-elections.
The contenders for the National Assembly’s one Islamabad seat, the two Sindh Assembly seats, and the three Balochistan Assembly seats must receive a minimum of 169 votes, 57 votes for each, and 17 votes for each in order to be elected. The Pakistani Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI)’s Chaudhry Ilyas Meharban and the Pakistan Peoples Party’s Syed Yousuf Raza Gilani are running for the federal capital seat in the coming elections. In addition, there are no standing leaders of the house, the opposition, or the chairman or deputy chairman for today’s polling.
