This curriculum consists of four years of training and instruction in the field of prosthetics and orthotics, culminating in a Bachelor of Science degree. Clinical placement (direct contact with patients) is utilized in the final year (semesters VII and VIII) to strengthen clinical skills in assessment, prescription, casting, manufacturing, fitting, and checkout of prosthetic and orthotic appliances for the appropriate patients. An artificial limb (prosthesis) is given to someone who has lost a limb or a portion of it, while an orthosis is given to someone who needs support, deformity repair, or pain treatment. To fit and monitor a suitable device in either situation, practitioners must do thorough patient assessments and understand human anatomy, physiology, and function. Graduates of P&O programs will be trained in a variety of fields, including human sciences, mechanical and bioengineering, communication, and multidisciplinary teamwork, as well as practical work with people suffering from frequently complex ailments and comprehending the materials and equipment used to help them.
