QUETTA: Following an explosion in a coal mine in the Zardalo area of Balochistan’s Harnai district, eight miners were rescued while at least twelve miners died, according to officials on Wednesday. “The rescue operation is now over,” stated Abdul Ghani Baloch, the chief inspector of mines for the province. He claimed that when the methane gas explosion occurred overnight, twenty miners were inside the mine.
He said that while the survivors were being transported to hospitals, the rescue teams had found twelve bodies. The western parts of Pakistan that border Afghanistan have coal resources and mine mishaps frequently occur, mostly as a result of methane buildups. According to labor union leaders, mine workers have long complained that unsafe working conditions and a lack of safety equipment are the main reasons for frequent accidents.
Three miners lost their lives in a coal mine disaster in the Shangla district of Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa (K-P) in October 2023 in the Darra Adam Khel area. The tragedy happened in a coal mine in the Kale Khel region as a result of exposure to toxic gasses. This is the second time in a week that a Shangla coal worker has died in an incident like this. A few days before, unknown gunmen on motorcycles shot and killed a miner manager from Shangla in Quetta, Balochistan. In May of last year, an explosion inside a coal mine in Balohistan’s Dukki area resulted in the death of another coal miner and the injuries of four more.
The Express Tribune was informed by the police that there was a massive explosion and that methane gas was present in the mine. A police official stated, “As a result of the explosion, one collier was killed and four others suffered serious burn wounds.” The injured miners were sent to the District Headquarters Hospital Dukki for medical attention. To treat the injured, the hospital declared an emergency. In the last several months, many innocent lives have been lost due to dangerous working conditions in Balochistan’s coal mines.
