Police in Surbandar, Gwadar reported that on Thursday, seven barbershop employees were slain and one injured when unidentified gunmen broke into their residential quarters while they were asleep. The victims were employed at a barbershop in Surbandar, which is around 25 kilometers away from Gwadar, according to Gwadar Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Zohaib Mohsin, who spoke with Dawn.com about the incident. It happened at around three in the morning. A list of the dead provided to Dawn.com by the SSP indicates that the injured were from Mian Channu, Khanewal, and the victims were from the districts of Khanewal and Lodhran in Punjab. The attack has not yet been attributed to any group.
A senior police official in Gwadar, Muhammad Mohsin, was quoted by AFP as saying: “We are investigating the matter at the moment but it looks like they were attacked because they were Punjabis.” SSP Mohsin stated that the police took the injured individual and the corpses of the deceased to Gwadar Hospital after the incident. He continued by saying that law enforcement had blocked off the area because they were starting to hunt for the miscreants. Four ambulances have transported the dead to their native places, according to Gwadar Deputy Commissioner Hamoodur Rehman. He said that the injured person had also been sent to Karachi after receiving medical attention.
Mir Sarfraz Bugti, the chief minister of Balochistan, denounced the Gwadar worker killings, labeling them as “open terrorism.” With sincere regrets, he promised the families that they would not be forgotten and that he would do everything in his power to support them. “We will pursue terrorists and those who assist them,” stated Bugti, stressing that Pakistan is neither a haven nor sanctuary for terrorists. The chief minister declared, “We will use whatever force is necessary against the terrorists.” He emphasized that in any event, the state’s writ will be upheld. “Every single drop of Pakistani blood will be counted,” he declared.
According to a statement on X by official broadcaster PTV News, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif denounced the incident and offered his condolences to the families of the victims. “The country’s opponents are cowards for engaging in this act of terrorism. The statement said, “We are committed to eliminating terrorism at its source. Mohsin Naqvi, the interior minister, expressed similar feelings, expressing his profound grief and condolences for the deaths of the seven laborers. In a statement released by the Ministry of Interior on X, Naqvi declared, “The beasts who play with the lives of the innocent don’t deserve to be called humans.”
The home minister of Balochistan, Mir Zia Ullah Langau, promised tough punishment for the terrorists. He mentioned that an incident report has been requested and that the matter is being examined from every angle. He declared, “The killing of innocent laborers is a cowardly act,” and promised that the terrorists would face consequences. According to a spokesman, the Balochstani administration also denounced the murder and referred to it as “open terrorism.” According to the spokeswoman, administrative authorities arrived at the scene of the event and made contact with the district administration. The spokesman said that calls are being made to the departed people’s families.
The spokesperson announced that an inquiry into the incident has been mandated. The act was denounced by PPP Chairman Bilawal Bhutto-Zardari, who stated that the “brutal killing of innocent workers is open terrorism” in a statement posted on X from the party’s official account. “This barbarism has deeply infuriated the people of the entire country, including Balochistan; humanity is ashamed,” the message stated. Bilawal stated that Pakistan is dedicated to the total eradication of terrorism and that the criminals responsible for the crime have to be prosecuted.
