On Saturday, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Punjab, and Balochistan governors were appointed, with President Asif Ali Zardari giving his approval. As part of an agreement made with the PML-N before joining the coalition government, PPP Chairman Bilawal Bhutto-Zardari nominated two senior party leaders for the positions of KP and Punjab governors one day ago. Jaffar Khan Mandokhail has been named the new governor of Balochistan by PML-N’s provincial branch.
According to a statement from the president’s office today, President Zardari has given his approval for the nomination of Faisal Karim Kundi, the PPP’s central information secretary, to the positions of governor for KP, Sardar Saleem Haider for Punjab, and Mandokhail for Balochistan. The authorization was granted under Article 101(1) of the Constitution, it stated. “The president shall appoint a governor for each province after consulting the prime minister,” states the relevant subsection.
Bilawal visited Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif at the PM House shortly after the nominations and told him of the outcome. The topic of the governors of the two provinces was discussed during a one-on-one conversation between the two leaders, according to a source in the PM Office. Balighur Rehman, the head of the PML-N, currently holds the position of governor of Punjab, whereas Haji Ghulam Ali of Jamiat Ulema-i-Islam-Fazl holds the same position in KP. Sources claim that following the supremo approval of the PML-N, PM Shehbaz emailed President Zardari a summary of Mandokhail’s nomination.
Mandokhail had also confirmed the development when he was approached by Dawn. The leader of the Balochistan National Party-Mengal, Malik Abdul Wali Khan Kakar, who was appointed to the position in 2022, would be replaced by him. With the backing of other parties, the PPP and PML-N decided on a cooperative approach to establish a government in the center following the elections on February 8. As a condition of the agreement, the PPP would receive some important constitutional positions. As part of the agreement, the party already received the positions of deputy speaker of the National Assembly, chairman of the Senate, and president. In addition, the PPP leaders had agreed to be appointed governors of two of the four provinces by the PML-N.
