The National Accountability Bureau (NAB) has filed a £190 million graft reference against Imran Khan, the founder of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), and his wife Bushra Bibi. The indictment was revealed during Tuesday’s accountability court session at Adiala Jail. The judgment was issued by Judge Nasir Javed Rana of the Accountability Court, who also asked for five witnesses for the upcoming hearing on March 6. Imran Khan and Bushra Bibi refuted the accusations made against them. Judge Rana ordered NAB to give two copies of the reference to the defense attorney in addition to approving the former prime minister’s request to meet his wife during the prior session.
In addition, stating that he hadn’t seen his doctor in seven months, the PTI founding chairman asked the judge to permit him to see his doctor for a dental examination. Khan responded to the judge of the Accountability Court’s request for him to speak with the jail medic by saying, “lest the jail medic extract my teeth.” In response, the judge requested that he move an application. Without holding any proceedings, the court postponed the indictment until February 27.
In March 2023, NAB opened an inquiry into the Al-Qadir University Trust matter, which is currently known as the £190 million reference. On April 28, the NAB converted the inquiry into an investigation. NAB claims that in exchange for Rs 50 billion paid as a settlement with the National Crime Agency (NCA) of the UK, which was adjusted instead of a fine imposed on him by the Supreme Court, Imran, and his wife received billions of rupees, and land measuring hundreds of canals from Malik Riaz of Bahria Town.
The PTI president was detained by a large number of Rangers in May at the Islamabad High Court (IHC) premises as he was requesting bail in connection with many FIRs filed against him. Imran’s arrest on the court’s property was later deemed “legal” by the IHC.
