LAHORE: On Monday, 13 defendants in the Corps Commander House attack case related to the May 9 riots were granted post-arrest release by an anti-terrorism court. The suspects’ bail requests were granted by Judge Arshad Javed, who also ordered them to provide surety bonds of Rs. 100,000 each. Samar Khan, Abdul Rehman, Imran Rashid, Saifullah, Qasim Najamuddin, Hafiz Mudassir Ali, Waheed Haider, Nasir Khan, Muhammad Sajjad, Rafaqat Ali, Umar Farooq, Obaidullah, and Muhammad Rashid are among the accused. For additional hearings, the judge postponed the bail requests of thirty-four additional accused until Tuesday.
When former Prime Minister Imran Khan was arrested on May 9, 2018, protesters attacked and vandalized Jinnah’s home, the corps commander’s home in Lahore. As a result, Sarwar Road police filed a case against PTI leaders and employees. The judicial remand of PTI’s former MNA Aalia Hamza Malik and social media activist Sanam Javed in the Shadman police station attack case of the May 9 riots was extended by an antiterrorism court on Monday. The women were brought before the court by the police when their judicial remand period expired. The judge extended their judicial remand till May 15, after which they were returned to Sargodha jail by the police.
In several May 9 cases, including attacks on the PML-N headquarters in Model Town and the Corps Commander House, both women—who have been detained for more than nine months—were granted bail. PTI-Punjab president Dr. Yasmin Rashid’s post-arrest bail pleas in three May 9 riot cases were postponed by an antiterrorism court on Monday. An attorney for the prosecution requested more time to present the court with the case file. After granting the plea, Judge Arshad Javed postponed the hearing to May 13. In the events of the Askari Tower attack, the Shadman police station fire, and the police car burning in the cantonment area, bail was requested in the applications.
