LAHORE: Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi said his opinion that social media platforms are being “misused,” and that legislation should be examined to prevent such behaviors, one day after the information minister confirmed the suspension of the well-known social networking site, X. Millions of Pakistani internet users are still unable to access X, which was once Twitter, due to its suspension before the general elections on February 8. In a Tuesday speech to journalists in Lahore, Naqvi stated, “Social media laws should be envisaged,” adding that social media was being abused. Throughout the world, social media restrictions have been put into place.
The interior minister believed that campaigns of slander and propaganda against individuals should be kept apart from the right to free speech. “Freedom of speech is a right that should not be abused by anyone,” Naqvi responded to the question by saying that it was time to put an end to smear tactics against judges, lawmakers, and other national institutions. Following the lead of industrialized nations like the US, he supported the country’s adoption of social media rules.
Following Atta Tarar’s admission that the social networking app was suspended nationwide, the federal minister for information and broadcasting made his statement. Regarding X’s (previously Twitter) suspension, Tarar indicated that the platform was already banned when they took office, even though there had been no formal notice of the restriction. The information minister emphasized the need for a charter outlining “dos and don’ts” and suggested that political parties hold discussions about what “red lines” should not be crossed when using social media. He voiced his frustration with the accusations made on social media against women, mistreatment, bad behavior, and the sacrifices made by martyrs.
